National Cyber Security Coordinator Lt Gen (retired) Rajesh Pant said cyberattacks have gone up multifold in the current environment. Every day, 4 lakh pieces of malware are found and 375 cyberattacks are witnessed, Pant said.
Referring to China as a major challenge from a cybersecurity perspective for India, Pant said, “In such unprecedented times, you mentioned 2 Cs – the challenge of Corona and challenge of Cyber.”
“Actually, at the perch which I sit, there are 3 Cs. The third ‘C’ of course is on our northern border, which is another challenge that we are facing.”
On this note, he cautioned people to be very careful about hoax calls and click-baits whose sole intention is to dig information from an internet user.
At an event organized by the largest private sector lender HDFC Bank, Pant said, “In such an environment, cyber-attacks have gone up multi-fold. There is 4 lakh malware, we find every day. 375 cyber-attacks take place.”

He also mentioned the recent cases of fraud at City Union Bank where a person entered the core banking system through a click, and also the ones at Bangladesh Bank and Cosmos Bank.
In another event, HDFC Bank launched the ‘Mooh Bandh Rakho‘ campaign to create awareness on cyber frauds and preventing them through various mediums, including over 1,000 secure banking workshops and also a rap-song.
In the last few months, there have been a couple of cyber attacks on some famous brands. The list includes attacks on Bigbasket, Haldiram’s, and Truecaller India.
On October 16, US-based cybersecurity firm Cybele reported a data breach on PM Modi’s website Narendra Modi., believed to have impacted 5 lakh users which shows the poor cybersecurity infrastructure in the country.
